Hiring a skip bin is a great way to dispose of your excessive waste when completing a renovation, move, or decluttering project. However, understanding the different skip bin sizes is recommended before you hire, so you know that you’re ordering the right bin for the right job. We’ve made things simple – and outlined the different skip bin sizes available and which type is best for each kind of job.

To start out, let’s go over the different skip bin sizes that are available for hire at CopperRock. We have eight different skip and bulk bins that you can choose from, each of which can be used on residential, commercial and construction sites.

Each skip bin size may only allow for certain types of rubbish to be placed in them. We recommend you read our article on the 9 things you can’t put in your skip bin to understand the full lists of banned products and materials. In general though, all skip bin sizes can take general waste and garden waste. All bins that are 4 cubic metres in size and under can take mixed heavy construction materials, while any bins that are over 6 cubic metres can only take light building waste and aren’t suitable for concrete, bricks or soil, except for our 6 cubic metre bulk bin which is perfect for concrete, bricks and soil.

What Size Skip Bins are Best for Certain Jobs?

To answer this question, it’s best if we look at a handful of common jobs that typically require a skip bin in order to complete and give you our best estimate for the skip bin size that would match best.

Best Skip Bin Size for Bathroom Renovations

When renovating a bathroom, you’ll most likely be throwing out old cabinets, tiles, shower screens, sinks, fittings, and, in some cases, bathtubs and toilets. You’ll want to hire a 3 or 4 cubic metre skip bin for this job, as even though some of the appliances may be on the bulkier side, bathrooms are typically one of the smallest rooms in a house.

Best Skip Bin Size for Kitchen Renovations

As kitchens vary in their sizes and appliances they have, it isn’t always easy to know what size skip bin is best. If you have a smaller kitchen with only a few appliances, then a 4 cubic metre skip bin should be more than enough. However, if your kitchen is spacious, covered in tiles, and has an oven, stovetop, dishwasher etc., a 6 cubic metre skip bin will be the smarter option.

Best Skip Bin Size for Moving House

When moving house, and performing a Marie Kondo cleanse, you’re bound to be discarding items that don’t have a place in your new life in your new home. If you’re only getting rid of general waste in your move, then you can probably get away with hiring a smaller skip bin in the 2-4 cubic metre range. However, if you plan on throwing out large pieces of furniture, white goods, or exercise equipment, then you should consider a larger skip bin in the 8-12 cubic metre range.

Pro Tip: Err on the side of caution and go bigger – you’ll likely underestimate how much stuff you have accumulated over the years.

Best Skip Bin Size for Garden Cleanups

A large garden cleanup can involve the removal of branches, bushes and large sticks that may be difficult to compact down in order to compact efficiently. While it’s recommended that you compact your garden waste as much as possible, it’s probably wise to hire a skip bin that’s at least 6 cubic metres to allow for larger objects that can’t be further broken down.

Some Final Advice When Choosing Skip Bin Sizes

If you’re stuck choosing between two skip bin sizes, bigger is always better. This not only gives you more room to work with, but it also mitigates the risk of you having to order another skip bin if you overload. It’s always cheaper to simply choose a slightly larger skip bin at the start, rather than having to hire a second one half way through your job.

Measure everything before you hire. Not only can you get an idea of how much bin space you’ll need by measuring any objects and materials that you plan to dispose of, but you should also measure the spot where you want the skip bin to be placed so there won’t be any surprises in the unfortunate event of your bin being delivered and it doesn’t fit.
