Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions regarding waste and recycling in the hope that you’ll find your answer here. This is because some recyclable items, such as mattresses, require further physical labour to transform them into a state fit for recycling. Therefore, the extra cost is used to pay our staff for their hard work! Also, remember we are a transfer station and everything that comes in is transported out.
When recycling food containers and boxes, the general rule is that small amounts of food left do not interfere with the recycling process. Therefore, we recommend giving jars and bottles a quick rinse after use and scraping any solid food scraps out of containers and boxes.
We recommend removing plastic bottle tops before recycling as they interfere with the recycling process. Steel tops should be gathered over time and collected in a can to be placed in recycling as they are too small to go into the sorting machine individually.
The best way you can prepare for your visit to our transfer station is sorting your rubbish according to our recycling categories! These are: e-waste, free recyclables, extra-cost recyclables and green waste. You can learn more about these on our do’s and don’ts page.
Yes, mattresses contain 90% recyclable materials! Since they need to be deconstructed to be recycled, discarding mattresses have an additional cost of $35 per mattress.
