Waste & Recycling FAQs

We understand that many of our customers, especially if its your first time visiting us, will have a range of questions you’re looking for an answer to. Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions regarding waste and recycling in the hope that you’ll find your answer here. If you have a question not answered in our recycling FAQs, we encourage you to give our team a call on (03) 9585 4385 and they will be happy to provide you with an in-depth answer to your question.

Does the free E-Waste disposal include all electronic items?

No. The free e-waste scheme only includes items as outlined by the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme. This includes items such as Televisions, Computers, Printers and Computer parts and peripherals.

Is recycling free?

As much as we would like it to be, not all recycling is free. To view a full list of items that can be recycled for free, visit our do’s and don’ts page.

Is green waste free to recycle?

No. Green waste is not free to recycle because there is a labour involved with mulching the materials for reuse.

Why are some items free to recycle while others aren’t?

This is because some recyclable items, such as mattresses, require further physical labour to transform them into a state fit for recycling. Therefore, the extra cost is used to pay our staff for their hard work!  Also, remember we are a transfer station and everything that comes in is transported out.

How clean does my recycling need to be?

When recycling food containers and boxes, the general rule is that small amounts of food left do not interfere with the recycling process. Therefore, we recommend giving jars and bottles a quick rinse after use and scraping any solid food scraps out of containers and boxes.

What should I do with bottle tops?

We recommend removing plastic bottle tops before recycling as they interfere with the recycling process. Steel tops should be gathered over time and collected in a can to be placed in recycling as they are too small to go into the sorting machine individually.

How can I best prepare for my visit to CopperRock?

The best way you can prepare for your visit to our transfer station is sorting your rubbish according to our recycling categories!  These are: e-waste, free recyclables, extra-cost recyclables and green waste. You can learn more about these on our do’s and don’ts page.

Can you take mattresses?

Yes, mattresses contain 90% recyclable materials! Since they need to be deconstructed to be recycled, discarding mattresses have an additional cost of $50 per mattress.

Can I get rid of non-recyclables at CopperRock?

Yes. However, charges apply to disposal of these.

Is the CopperRock facility a drive-up service?

Yes, when you arrive, you will first drive over the weighbridge and see our lovely weighbridge operators.  Then you will drive up to each different recycling station where our team will help you discard your waste.

I’m not able bodied. Will there be someone there to help me lift heavy items out of my car?

Of course! Our friendly team will be happy to help you take the waste out of your vehicle.

Should I sort my rubbish before visiting CopperRock?
